Reading, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Our school recognises the importance of equipping our children with the skills to decode words, whilst ensuring that writing and reading emphasises and embeds rules for spelling and grammar.
Children are thoroughly assessed when they join us in Year 3 so that we can focus on any children who are not secure with all phases of the Letters and Sounds sythetic phonics scheme by providing further phonics teaching and intervention where necessary. This enablees children to recognise and learn patterns to help with wider and more complex words. We also teach high frequency words and spelling lists are provided throughout the year in every year group.
Spelling, grammar and punctuation is taught using the guidelines provided by the DFE to ensure that as many children as possible meet the required standards by the end of Key Stage 2.
Comprehension skills are also taught throughout year groups, using a combination of guided reading schemes, group readers and individual books as well as comprehension testing materials to enable the children to enjoy books and to become resilient readers, able to using higher-level thinking skills to articulate an understanding of a variety of texts. We also use a combination of early reading schemes and interventions when necessary. These include Oxford Reading scheme, 'Dancing Bears' and 'Rapid Reading.'
We assess the impact of all teaching and interventions on a regular basis, using a combination of teacher assessment and testing materials.
